Weight Loss Surgeries vs. Diet Pills

When it comes to weight loss options, there are a few routes different routes you can choose but when you want to lose a significant amount of weight, most people usually look at using weight loss supplements or having surgery. Both are fairly effective and both do carry some risk. However, generally speaking surgery should never need to be an option as it’s simply far too dangerous when you could still get positive results using diet pills.

Losing weight should be painless and safe and surgery is neither of these. There are mainly 4 different types of weight loss surgery, none of which are perfectly safe or painless. Here’s our breakdown of each, how they work, and the risks associated with each.

Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG) – With this surgery the stomach is stapled into two parts with the top portion having a very small amount of space to hold food. As the food arrives it is passed into the lower portion of the pouch through a small hole that is covered with a band to prevent it from expanding and bursting.

The risks with this surgery is that the band has been known to break down in the past and wearing can cause the staple line to break down and leak stomach acid into the abdomen, which can cause serious illness or even death....All for weight loss!

Laparoscopic Gastric Banding (Lap-Band) – This is a drastic surgery that is usually only done in people who are more than 100 pounds overweight. With this surgery an inflatable band is placed over the entire upper portion of the stomach. The band is meant to be permanent although the size can be adjusted by changing the amount of salt in the saline solution in the band.

There are many risks associated with this surgery including: nausea, vomiting, heartburn; abdominal pain; band slippage; and pouch enlargement.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RGB) – This surgery involves the stomach being stapled so that it creates a smaller pouch. The pouch is then attached to the small intestine so that it will limit the amount of food that you are able to eat and it will also reduce the number of nutrients that are passed into the small intestine.

The major risk of this surgery is that it will cause what is known as ‘dumping syndrome.’ This is when food is passed much too quickly through the small intestine. In addition to this the surgery can also cause nausea, weakness, sweating, faintness, diarrhea, infection, leaking, pulmonary embolism, gall stones, and a nutritional deficiency.

Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD) – This is the riskiest type of weight loss surgery and therefore, surgeons will rarely perform it. In this drastic surgery, an entire portion of the stomach is removed so that food and acid production will be reduced. The very small part of the stomach that is left will then be attached to the final segment of the small intestine with a small channel left so that bile and acidic juices can still work on food before they are passed into the intestine.

The biggest risk with this kind of surgery is nutritional deficiency.

As you can see, weight loss surgeries are not recommended. Much better option is using some form of a diet supplement, for example we have all natural Chico supplements.
